SHELBURNE FALLS — They serve the community, have fun doing it and are looking for a few helping hands.
The Shelburne Falls chapter of Kiwanis International is looking for new members to join them in supporting health, education and youth leadership development endeavors.
Kiwanis International is a global service organization dedicated to improving communities, particularly by supporting children. The Shelburne Falls chapter sponsors the Key Club at Mohawk Trail Regional School and offers four to five scholarships to high school students each year, in addition to programs for elementary school students, like the bicycle safety rodeo that teaches the importance of wearing a helmet and replacing your helmet at the end of its shelf life.
“We try to place our efforts towards helping groups of kids,” said treasurer Hugh Knox.
Membership of the Shelburne Falls Kiwanis Club has dwindled to just 10 members in recent years, Knox said. With this number, and the aging population of its membership, the club is becoming limited in the scale of fundraisers and programs. Knox is 81 years old and has been a member of the club for 55 years.
Knox said one of the club’s major fundraisers are its community dinners. Club members cook and serve food for more than 200 people, a task that is becoming difficult for the group.
“That’s a whole lot of work, and we’re willing to do the work, but at my age it doesn’t work out,” Knox said.
Knox said running the community dinners and other fundraisers, such as concession booths at MTRS athletic events, is a lot of work. Club members enjoy the work and spending time with one another while planning and running the fundraisers, but a few extra hands would be beneficial.

“It’s been a pleasant activity for us,” Knox said. “Members find pleasure in the work they do and because they enjoy the socialization.”
