ORANGE — A man was airlifted to a trauma center Wednesday afternoon following a single-vehicle crash just east of Exit 71 on Route 2, according to Orange’s fire chief.

The man was the sole occupant of a westbound newer-model Toyota Tundra that swerved 50 feet off the roadway and crashed into the treeline at around 1:50 p.m., causing serious injuries and significant damage to the front of the vehicle, said Fire Chief James Young. The patient was transported via ambulance to Athol Hospital, where he was then airlifted, though Young did not know to which trauma center.

Young did not have information on the victim’s age, name or condition. He said both lanes of traffic remained open while emergency personnel worked and they cleared the scene at 2:38 p.m.

The Orange Fire Department was assisted by the Orange Police Department and Massachusetts State Police.
