CHARLEMONT — A Pittsfield woman died Sunday after the motorcycle she and her husband were riding and an SUV collided on Route 2 near Avery Brook Road.

Sheila Rombeiro, 72, was taken by ambulance to Baystate Franklin Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Laurie Loisel.

Rombeiro was reportedly the passenger on the westbound motorcycle operated by her husband, Robert Rombeiro, 69, when the crash occurred at roughly 5:15 p.m. on Sunday. Loisel said Robert Rombeiro was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield to be treated for his injuries.

According to Loisel, the SUV involved in the crash was traveling east. The cause of the collision is under investigation by State Police troopers assigned to the DA’s office, as well as the Crime Scene Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction sections. Loisel said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

Loisel also said it appears the Rombeiros were on one of two motorcycles, riding together. Loisel said the SUV’s driver, a 69-year-old woman from Greenfield, was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for treatment of her injuries.
