1794 Meetinghouse presents Richard Chase concert

NEW SALEM — The 1794 Meetinghouse at 26 South Main St. will present “Stone Man” Richard Chase, accompanied by Seth Hoffsommer on drums and Bryan Barstow on bass, on Saturday, June 15, and award-winning musicians Jung-Yi Alice Hsieh Daugherty on flute and Ilya Kazantsev on piano on Sunday, June 23.

Chase performs as a solo acoustic act or as part of the Richard Chase Group. Hoffsommer began his musical career at 4, singing with his family in gospel concerts at churches throughout New England, New York and Pennsylvania. He studied percussion with William Prieb (percussionist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra), Chris White (music professor at University of Maine, Orono), world-renowned jazz drummer Alan Dawson, and Greg Caputo (a drummer for legendary swing bandleader Benny Goodman). Barstow started playing bass at 14, later studying with Mark Respass. He has played with the Worcester-area bands Tomb Diver and The Rancid Blues Trio.

Chase, Hoffsommer and Barstow will begin performing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for those 13 to 17 years old. Anyone age 12 and under will be admitted for free.

Daugherty and Kazantsev met at Mannes School of Music in New York City. Daugherty now lives in Royalston and works as a flutist in New York and Massachusetts. Kazantsev has performed extensively with orchestras in Russia and the United States as well as appearing in recital in Germany, Japan, Italy, France, Canada, Ukraine, Belarus and Slovenia.

Daugherty and Kazantsev are set to begin performing at 4 p.m. on June 23. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for those 13 to 17. Anyone age 12 and under will be admitted for free.

No Assault & Batteries to hold ‘Summer Solstice Afternoon and Evening’

Orange Historical Society announces array of summertime events

ORANGE — The Orange Historical Society has reopened for the summer, featuring an array of social and cultural events in addition to its regular tour schedule.

Admission is free, but donations “in the hat” are gratefully accepted.

Scheduled community events at 41 North Main St. include an old-fashioned porch visit, featuring live music by Terry Reed on banjo and Doug Tanner on fiddle, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20. There will be complimentary refreshments. This program is also planned for July 18 and Aug. 15.

A traditional American Social Tea on the porch, featuring live banjo and fiddle music, is set for July 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. Guests can wear fanciful attire hailing from any historic era up to the present. Reservations must be made at least one week in advance by calling Ann Reed at 978 544-3864.

The second annual Hear & Tell of “unbelievable true stories of Orange” is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 2. Interested storytellers and audience members alike must call Reed at least one week in advance to reserve a spot. A social half-hour serving complimentary refreshments will follow the storytelling. Due to potentially intense subject matter, the event is recommended for mature individuals only.

The museum offers guided tours from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays from June through September. Off-schedule tours may be arranged by appointment by calling Historical Society President Kathryn Schiappa at 978-544-6814.

Wendell Annual Town Meeting to continue June 26

WENDELL — The Annual Town Meeting, originally scheduled for June 8, was recessed and will continue at 7 p.m. at the Town Offices on June 26. The town will take up Article 13 because the Connect America Fund Phase II disbursements cannot be designated for debt service until they are received.
