My Turn: Republican organizations breeding grounds for fascists?

Unless anyone becomes confused, I am not anti-Israel. Nor am I anti-Palestinian, and I am anti-Hamas. I do not approve of the current Israeli government nor of the way they have responded in Gaza as a result of the horrendous Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. That said, I found the recent letter “Breeding grounds for anarchists” [Recorder, June 1] regarding pro-Palestinaian student protesters at colleges full of reprehensible, authoritarian and anti-democratic vitriol worthy of the McCarthy era.

That is the background for my sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes serious letter in response, which follows fairly closely the same structure as the original letter replacing colleges with the country, student protesters with Republicans and anarchism with fascism:

The turmoil and disruptions within the U.S. caused by Republicans and other pro-Trump sympathizers, and anti-humanitarian and anti-American fascists, plus the ongoing sycophantic response by other Republican leaders, will help some Democrats in coming elections.

Recent polls reflect this development. I say this as a person who would prefer there were an alternative to both the major parties. About 80% of Americans are pro-Israel, including 60 million Evangelical Christians, who though they may be good people are obviously prone to believing nonsense since many of them support Israel because they believe doing so will hasten the Rapture. I take exception to such nonsense.

The Republicans have been laying the ground for a fascist ideology and the breeding of fascists for years. This should be prohibited. It has been hidden by their think tanks and complicit leadership. Also, their trips to and support of foreign fascist leaders should be prohibited.

Civil rights violations by their white supremacist allies should be prosecuted, including the use of unnecessary and excessive violence by the police. Congress should convene a committee to investigate anti-American activities by the Republican Party and other organizations allied with them, including the infiltration of the military and corporations.

Is this the evolution of a domestic terrorism organization? Republican leadership must cease colluding with and act against party members who are inciting dissent and violence within the country. If they don’t, they should be prosecuted by the judicial arm of the government.

High school students should avoid becoming Republicans. Corporations should avoid recruiting or employing these anti-American Republicans. The U.S. should continue to support Israel appropriately by continuing to pressure their current government to follow international law.
