Klines to perform at Discovery Center

TURNERS FALLS — Michael and Carrie Kline will perform on Friday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A.

The Klines perform a variety of genres of music, including country, gospel, coal mining songs, family songs and front porch music. They play alongside upright bass player Joe Blumenthal and mandolin player Jim Armenti.

“As folklorist-musicians, the Klines weave songs and stories, evoking the times that really matter — time with family and friends, spiritual times, wrapped in a patchwork quilt of vivid imagery,” an event announcement from the Discovery Center reads.

There is a suggested sliding-scale donation of $6 to $15, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Children will be admitted for free. Coffee and baked goods will be provided.

Traditional Irish music on tap at Discovery Center

TURNERS FALLS — Composers and improvisers Dana Lyn and Kyle Sanna will perform with special guest Seamus Egan at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A, on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is presented by Antenna Cloud Farm.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at tinyurl.com/LynSannaConcert. Admission is free for those ages 18 and under.

Folk music and storytelling program coming to Peskeomskut Park

TURNERS FALLS — Musical storyteller Eli Elkus will perform an all-ages show on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Peskeomskut Park.

Elkus will present kind-hearted folk music and storytelling, including tales of travel, humanity and treasures of the natural world. This family-friendly program features works that juxtapose the perils of modern times, the simpler ways of old times, and the real and natural world that endures through all.

There is a rain date of Friday, Aug. 16. This event is free, thanks to support from the Montague Cultural Council, RiverCulture and Greenfield Cooperative Bank.

Upright bassist Wes Brown coming to Peskeomskut Park

TURNERS FALLS — Upright bassist Wes Brown will share the Peskeomskut Park bandshell with regional musicians for an evening of jazz and musical interpretation on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Don Anderson (trumpet), Jill Connolly (vocals), Scott Sasanecki (guitar), Dan Dewalt (trombone/keyboard), Julian Gerstin (percussion), Gary Fieldman (drums), and Nat Needle (keyboard) will join Brown on stage.

The event is free, and attendees are welcome to bring a lawn chair and picnic dinner. Friday, Aug. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. is the rain date.

The concert is part of the Turners Falls Summer Series sponsored by RiverCulture, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and Greenfield Cooperative Bank, with additional support from the Shea Theater Arts Center and the Montague Cultural Council.

Our Lady of Peace Church to host 15-week prayer and discussion group

TURNERS FALLS — Our Lady of Peace Church at 90 Seventh St. is hosting a 15-week meditation and book discussion group called “Centering Prayer,” led by Joe Toritto. The group will meet weekly beginning Monday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Early registrants for this free course will receive a complimentary copy of “Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening” by Cynthia Bourgeault.

Toritto taught theology at Catholic high schools and colleges for the past 40 years, and he directs the Greenfield-based hospice choir Eventide Singers. He leads Taizé prayer services in the Pioneer Valley, and has been practicing centering prayer since 1980. It is a form of contemplative prayer done in silence.
