GREENFIELD — It might not have been the regular season the Greenfield boys basketball team had hoped for, but the Green Wave are hoping a run in the MIAA Division 4 state tournament can make up for it.
Greenfield got started Tuesday, hosting 39th-seeded Maimonides in a Div. 4 preliminary round game. The 26th-seeded Wave wasted no time taking command, building a 13-4 lead after one quarter before pulling away with a 67-33 triumph at Nichols Gymnasium.
The win means Greenfield (11-10) will face seventh-seeded Lunenburg on the road Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Round of 32.
“It’s good to win and move on,” Green Wave coach Angelo Thomas said. “You can take a deep breath. Anyone can win any game. Just like the mantra of March Madness, you have to survive and advance. It doesn’t matter how well you play, you just have to win and advance.”
Freshman Grayson Thomas opened the game with four points in the first quarter while Jon Breor added four points and Caleb Murray knocked down a 3, helping Greenfield build its 13-4 lead after one.
The 3-pointers were falling for the Wave in the second, as Thomas knocked down a pair from behind the arc while Murray added a second trey. Once Maimonides (8-7) got on Greenfield on the perimeter, Breor took over in the paint by scoring six points that helped the Green Wave build a 30-12 lead at the half.
Thomas — who finished with a game-high 22 points — tossed in eight points in the third quarter while Caleb Thomas and Gavin Arsenault knocked down 3-pointers that helped Greenfield take a 50-24 lead into the fourth and all but put the game away.
Breor tallied 18 points, Caleb Thomas scored 11 points, Murray finished with six points while Arsenault added five points for the Green Wave, which will be looking to spring an upset over the Blue Knights (15-5) Thursday.

“We have to perform to expectations and play to our expectations,” Angelo Thomas said. “Overall it’s been a tough, up-and-down year. Now everybody has a one game chance at this. If we come out and play hard and play as a team, we’ll have a chance against anybody. That’s what I believe but the big part is going out and doing it.”
Assabet Valley 58, Frontier 55 — A valiant fourth quarter comeback from the Redhawks fell short on Tuesday.
Hosting the 33rd-seeded Aztecs in the Div. 4 preliminary round, No. 32 Frontier found itself trailing 41-40 going into the final eight minutes before Assabet pulled ahead 52-42, with two minutes to play.
Garrett Dredge gave the Redhawks life with a 3 before Max Millette converted an and-one that cut the deficit to 52-48 with 1:25 to play.
The Aztecs later sank a pair at the line to take a 56-52 lead with 13 seconds to play but Frontier’s Alex Ellis drained a deep 3 with seven seconds to go. Assabet was fouled and made both and a Redhawk 3 at the buzzer didn’t fall, as the Aztecs advanced to the Round of 32 with a victory at Goodnow Gymnasium.
Assabet advanced to face top-seeded Albert D. Holland.
Millette finished with 29 points, Dredge tallied 11 points, Ellis recorded seven points while Ty Skroski added four points for Frontier (12-9).
