Day 1 of the MIAA Track and Field Meet of Champions took place on Thursday at Fitchburg State University, with athletes from Mahar, Frontier and Greenfield competing.

Mahar’s Mitchell Krasco entered the day as the No. 1 seed in the boys triple jump, having hit a mark of 47 feet, 6.5 inches last weekend at the MIAA Div. 6 championship meet. No other athlete in the Commonwealth had jumped that far at their respective championship meets.

The senior didn’t have the day he imagined on Thursday, posting a top leap of 46-2 to take sixth place. Catholic Memorial’s Amar Skeete was the winner (48-5).

“I didn’t do that well,” Krasco said. “I underperformed and should have done better. I can’t make excuses. I just didn’t perform as well as I should have.”

Krasco still qualified for the New England Championships, set for next weekend at Willow Brook Park in Connecticut, and he’s hoping for a better showing there.

“I have a chance to go again next week and be better,” Krasco said. “I’ll be better next week.”

Frontier’s Lilly Novak took 16th in the girls discus, posting a top throw of 98 feet, 7 inches, while fellow Redhawk Ben Cachiguango was 19th in the 400-meter hurdles (58.02 seconds).

Greenfield’s Mason Youmell was 23rd in the 400 hurdles with a time of 58.27 seconds.
