Nellie White: Library funding cuts ‘not the end of the world’

A recent letter claims that libraries are “a vital cornerstone of democracy” (April 1). The letter writer is entitled to her opinion, but that’s an absurd thing to say when many let drag queens in the front door. They shouldn’t be let in at all!

I suppose libraries are fine for people too stingy to buy their own books and DVDs, but I’ve never considered them vital. Not when you can have access to free smut. But I don’t mind looking at them as I drive by them. Some are quaint little buildings that take one back to a simpler time, though the one in Greenfield is a monstrosity and really belongs in a huge city, not the dead zone that is Greenfield.

What does bother me is that most libraries (or is it all libraries?) hold events that appeal only to left-wingers. When a library has a Historical Women Series, it will always focus on a Ruth Bader Ginsburg or a Kamala Harris, not an Amy Coney Barrett or a Sarah Palin. And I’m not sure who frequents libraries in 2025 since youngsters are constantly on their precious phones and the elderly are indoors sawing wood or glued to their TV screens.

So how ticked off are librarians? Well, according to HuffPost, “Librarians are mad as hell at the Trump administration.” I’m figuring there isn’t a librarian in America who voted for Trump, but I could be wrong. I hope I’m wrong. The truth is, if libraries lost all their funding and closed their doors, the people who go there would find something else to do, like raking their yard or walking their dog more often. It wouldn’t be the end of the world.
