CONWAY — Prepare for a visit from the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future, as a group of local actors put on a performance of “A Christmas Carol” while raising money for two causes.

Michael Haley, a Conway resident and Hollywood veteran, will join up with several other actors to voice 30 characters, create sound effects and act out commercials for a dramatic, radio-style reading of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas story.

The reading will happen on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Conway Firemen’s Relief Association building, located at 41 Ashfield Road next to the Fire Station on Route 116. Folks are asked to bring a $10 donation, or however much they can give, which will go to the Conway Firemen’s Auxiliary Scholarship Fund and Greenfield Community College’s Daniel J. Haley Scholarship. Parking is available across the street.

“We’re just a group of actors that decided to do a nostalgic radio show,” Haley said, noting this small group traces its roots to the Academy of Music in Northampton, where the actors used to put on a full theatrical production of “A Christmas Carol.” “It’s always been for charity. … People have a good time.”

This is the fourth year Haley and his crew have put together the show, although they were interrupted for a while due to the pandemic.

With live sound effects, actors shifting voices and brief commercial breaks — written by themselves — Haley said “it’s all done like a 1930s radio show” broadcast on their fake radio station, W-XMAS. The radio play was adopted by Haley and former longtime Deerfield Academy Theater Director John Reese.

The show is expected to last around an hour. Cider and cookies will be served for refreshments.

“It’s a little over an hour of just relaxing and forgetting all the crap going around in the world,” Haley said. “No humbugs need apply.”

Two $250 Conway Firemen’s Auxiliary scholarships are distributed to Conway high school seniors each year with priority given to students considering college, a trade school or a certificate program and who are involved in community service or other extracurricular activities.

The Daniel J. Haley Scholarship was established by Haley and his wife Joan in honor of their grandnephew, “who was like a son and put himself through UMass in the Chemical Engineering Department.” Just a month before he graduated in 2012, though, Daniel Haley was killed by a drunk driver on Route 116 in Hadley.

“We set up a scholarship at Greenfield Community College for any student who’s going to transfer to UMass and transfer in any kind of engineering,” Haley said. “It means a lot to us and the people of Conway — for a small town — are an incredibly generous town in terms of participation and giving.”
