Louise Amyot’s Feb. 1 letter to the editor saddened me too [“Sad to see stores go”]. I am not in Greenfield as often as I used to be, so I was unaware that the World Eye had closed. I was disappointed that I could not find any public notice of its closing, either. (I did find reference to it on Facebook, but I am not a subscriber.)

I arrived in Greenfield in 1969. At that time the World Eye was a narrow hole-in-the-wall on Federal Street. I remember, though not well, chatting with the owner at the time. Was his name Charles? As I recall, he knew personally some well-known American writer (probably more than one). Was it Hemingway or Frost? The World Eye was an institution that served the greater Greenfield community well for over 50 years.

I confess that I contributed to its demise by succumbing to the convenience and variety of shopping online in recent years. Nevertheless, it is sad to see such a good place go. I invite other readers whose memories and knowledge are better than mine to write and share what they know of the World Eye, especially in its earliest days. Its closing is a loss to our community.
