I want to thank Greenfield City Councilor Wahab Minhas for asking the City Council to reconsider its vote on Dec. 18 to remove the limit on the number of apartments in multifamily buildings.

I would hate to see Greenfield try to emulate the residential towers of Northampton, Amherst or Cambridge. If you look across the city, our apartment buildings are mostly limited to four stories, except for buildings near our central commercial area, or units that pre-date zoning.

We require most apartment buildings to get a special permit, which requires that projects “shall not detract from the character and scale of neighboring properties.”

This is one of the reasons it makes sense to limit size and height in the first place.

Please reconsider your vote before it is too late.
