Alden Booth: Holiday piece lacked tolerance, sensitivity

I’m responding to a recent My Turn by my fellow Gill resident, Gary Bourbeau. The writer is the minister of the church in our town common and I assume he considers himself a civic leader of sorts and a Christian. The piece that he submitted to the Recorder [”Trashing thru the snow, as MAGA rules the day”], an attempt to rewrite some of our better known Christmas Carols, is in a style that he states, “can cheer all of us up … all in good fun.” Really?
It seems quite clear that besides the fact that it is a jumble of difficult to read broken sentences, the intention is clearly to gloat over the election and goad people of a political persuasion different from his own. He couldn’t be more insincere by claiming it will cheer us up and be all in good fun.
What would Christ think about such a piece that clearly exhibits a lack of tolerance and sensitivity to others? And how might Jesus respond to our newly elected officials of selfish, greedy felons, sex traffickers, and liars? Aren’t they the money lenders and scum whose tables he overthrew in the temple? Frankly I’m embarrassed that our minister here in Gill finds these folks to be worthy of praise. I’ve been curious about checking out one of the minister’s 10 a.m, Sunday services but after reading that, I’ve lost all curiosity — no thank you to attending a worship service led by him.
