Excellent My Turn “Old-school words” [Recorder, Dec. 30], Ms. Wosniak. May I add some more to the list and also how “old-school” folks like me (turning 81 this March) communicate? Remember fiddlesticks or oopsydaisy?
Now let’s return to the era of hand-cranked and rotary phones and party lines. “What are those,” the youngins ask? We talked slowly and clearly: we would be asked what are you doing, not whachadoin.
Cell phones are great for us oldsters but again we (I trust others will agree with me) don’t all have caller ID, so don’t just voicemail “call me back.” Leave your number slowly and clearly so we don’t have to repeat the message many times to figure it out. And if we have to leave you a voicemail, please listen to it first rather than just calling back the number on your screen. It could save on your calling minutes.
And one final thought. Ever notice that some people immediately ask “what” one nanosecond after you say something but start to respond before you finish the second time around? Delay repeating and sure enough, they heard you the first time! Have a more peaceful day!
