Laura Josephs: Is a 170-foot cell tower really needed near Newton Elementary School?

My family moved to Greenfield in 2017 and bought our first home near the Newton School last year. We would like our son to start kindergarten there in fall 2026.
Now AT&T’s is proposing a 170-foot cell tower for the wetland area between Tractor Supply and I-91, close to the Newton School. A tower of this height is not allowed in a lot this small according to our ordinances. In fact, this is a residential district not zoned for cell towers and this one would “tower” 100 feet above the tree line. According to AT&T’s website, there are no coverage gaps. But when they present to the Zoning Board of Appeals, they show a different map, gaps included. They refuse to provide “dropped call data” which is the only scientific way to prove the need for this nearly 16-story metal structure in our city’s entrance.
This Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m., a national expert on tower coverage and risks, Kent Chamberlin, PhD, will present to the ZBA. While this tower might not impact your property values, will the next one? Please support your neighbors by attending and requesting a true and substantiated evaluation of our current coverage so Greenfield can decide what infrastructure is needed rather than bending to the one-size-fits-all plan of a multi-billion dollar company. You can join us in person at City Hall or online. The meeting link is available @ hilltownhealth.org (where you also find a link to tower fires and collapses) or greenfield-ma.gov. Thank you.
