The birds are chirping, the sugarhouses are open, and warmer temperatures will melt some of the ice that is currently covering our sidewalks, but overnight temperatures will create patches of dangerous black ice, so I wanted to put out there that walking will be dangerous for a little while longer. I’ve been hearing sad tales of broken hips, concussions, bruises and frustration.
It’s hard to be trapped indoors, but there are some things you can do.
As a foot care nurse, I often offer advice about balance, shoe fit, foot flexibility and the best way to walk. On ice, modifications must be made. The normal heel-toe foot action will put you off balance on ice. Instead, take small deliberate steps, don’t transfer weight until the footling is secure, take small steps on flat feet. Don’t crunch your toes; allow them to spread and connect to the ground. And walking poles should be your new best friends.
It might sound silly, but think of the way a penguin walks, imitate that and you will have more stability. Look ahead, go slow and steady, and be watchful for patches of ice. If you feel strain, rolling your shoulders will help loosen you up. Breath deep, smile and enjoy.
Some people have access to a gym or indoor walking track, and although fresh air and sunshine have great benefits, walking indoors until the streets are safer is a good choice. You can walk at the mall if there are no other options. While sitting, you can release tension by bending your knees and letting your hips rotate, stretching your toes wide, curling them tight, and rotating your foot.
The body likes to move and sitting stiffens us up. A shoulder roll, a laugh with a friend, and a little loving care for our feet is good for the soul.
Be patient. Take good care of yourself. The days are getting longer, and spring will be here soon. If you stay safe now, you will be enjoying the season and not recovering from a fall.
