It was a Senior Night to remember for the Greenfield hockey team.

Locked in a 1-1 tie with overtime looming against East Longmeadow on Saturday night at Collins-Moylan Arena, the Green Wave showed a flare for the dramatics to send the fans home happy.

Shawn Beckwith found Luca Siano in front of the Spartans goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation, and the junior forward buried the opportunity in close. Siano’s marker with 59 seconds to go proved to be the game winner as Greenfield stunned East Longmeadow 2-1 for a huge Berry Division victory that kept the Wave in first place alone atop the league standings.

With the East Longmeadow net empty for an extra attacker in the final minute, Greenfield managed to keep serious threats away from freshman goalie Ben Johnson to secure the one-goal victory.

Greenfield improved to 11-5-1 overall with its second win in a row and fourth in the last five games. The Wave are now 7-3-1 in the Berry, ahead of second place Westfield (5-3-2).

The Spartans dropped to 8-7-1, 5-5-1.

East Longmeadow took a 1-0 lead with 3:37 remaining in the second period, as Mason Grasso skated in and ripped a shot up high to open the scoring.

It stayed that way into the third. With the clock ticking away and Greenfield on the power play, Siano held the back down low and slid a pass across the ice to a wide open Jake Jurek. The senior buried his opportunity into the open net, pulling the Wave even and creating energy back into Collins-Moylan Arena in the process.

That set the stage for the final-minute heroics from Siano. Brady Poreda was also credited with an assist along with Beckwith. After being held scoreless for nearly 42 minutes of game action, Greenfield tallied both of its goals in a span of 2 minutes, 24 seconds to pull out the impressive come-from-behind win.

Johnson came up huge between the pipes for Greenfield in just his second-ever varsity appearance. The freshman goalie stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced, including several important saves early when East Longmeadow peppered the net. The Spartans held a 42-18 edge in shots on goal overall.

Seniors Jurek, Jake Knight, Loki Rhodes, Cam Hopkins, Matt Garvin, Porter Hall and William Petrin were honored for their contributions to the program – on and off the ice.

Greenfield, which sat No. 17 in the most recent MIAA Division 4 Power Rankings, has two road games remaining in the regular season, starting with Monday’s game at high-powered central Mass. foe Hudson. The Hawks were No. 9 in the most recent Div. 4 Power Rankings, and enter with a 13-1-2 record. Puck drop is slated for 6 p.m. at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough. The regular season concludes on Thursday when Greenfield plays at East Longmeadow in a rematch at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.

Bliss, Turners compete at sectionals

It was an impressive performance from Turners Falls’ Liam Bliss on Saturday.

Competing at the Central/West Sectional Swimming & Division Championships at Springfield College, Bliss was the lone individual qualifier from the Thunder and rose to the occasion in a big way.

The junior finished in seventh place in the 50-yard freestyle, bettering his seed time by 0.83 seconds to touch in 23.23 seconds. Bliss was seeded 15th in the event, and his Herculean performance punched a qualifying ticket to next weekend’s MIAA Division 2 Swimming Championships at Boston University.

Bliss also took 12th place on Saturday in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.34. That was a time improvement of 2.54 seconds, and he also teamed with William Tyler, Malcolm Tyler and Tyler Galenski to finish 19th in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:07.03.

Bliss and the Thunder amassed 17 points to finish in 20th place as a team.

On the girls’ side, a pair of Turners Falls relay teams finished in 17th place in their respective events.

The 200 free relay quartet of Alice Fortin, Tristan Bliss, Rosie Fortin and Avery Heathwaite posted a time of 1:53.63, taking over two full seconds off their seed time.
