The middle portion of a huge three-day stretch for the Turners Falls softball team saw the Thunder save their best for last on Friday.

Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the seventh inning against Frontier, Janelle Massey clubbed a game-tying two-run home run, and Mia Marigliano later followed with a go-ahead two-run single to propel Turners to an eventual 6-3 victory in a Franklin County League West contest at Zabek Field in South Deerfield.

It was the second impressive win in as many days for Turners (9-0), which edged Franklin Tech 1-0 on Thursday. Rival Greenfield awaits on Saturday for another key early-season contest.

Turners led 1-0 into the bottom of the sixth before the Redhawks (5-5) rallied against Turners pitcher Madi Liimatainen. With two outs, Whitney Campbell was hit by a pitch then both Ashley Taylor and Delaney Fifield drew walks. That set the stage for the red-hot Skyler Steele (2-for-3), who blooped a two-run double down the left field line to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. Frontier added another run when Olivia Machon reached on an error to make it 3-1.

But Turners didn’t go away, as Madisyn Dietz walked to lead off the seventh and Massey hit the tying home run. After Marigliano’s go-ahead hit, Holly Myers tacked on an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.

Liimatainen worked around a leadoff bunt single by Gabby Adams (3-for-4) in the bottom of the seventh, and closed the outing with back-to-back strikeouts to secure the team’s ninth consecutive win to open the 2024 campaign. The junior finished with nine strikeouts to go with five walks.

Taylor struck out five and walked five in seven innings for Frontier. Hailey Hutkoski had two of the Hawks’ nine hits, with the hosts outhitting Turners by a 9-5 margin.

Franklin Tech 20, Athol 1 (5) — A day after being shut out by Turners Falls, the Eagles’ bats were alive and well on Friday.

Kylee Gamache and Lili Inman both hit home runs, and Franklin Tech cruised to a 20-1 Franklin County League East victory at Nancy Gifford Field.

Tech scored 11 runs in the first inning and tacked on seven more runs in the second.

Gamache finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs, while Hannah Gilbert was 3-for-3 with six RBIs in the victory. Cordelia Guerin slashed three hits and two RBIs for Tech (8-1), and Gianna DiSciullo added two hits and an RBI.

Winning pitcher Lilly Ross struck out eight in a complete-game outing in the circle, allowing just three hits and no walks.

Athol’s Jenna Bonenfant had two hits, while Madilyn Hermes added a hit and drove in the lone run for the Bears.

Greenfield 10, Taconic 1 —  MacKenzie Paulin struck out 11, walked two and surrendered just three hits in a seven-inning victory for the Green Wave on Friday in Pittsfield.

Gloria McDonald smacked three hits for Greenfield (5-1), which beat Taconic for the second time in as many days. Carly Blanchard and Ainslee Flynn each had two hits and an RBI.

Ivy Rae tripled and scored twice for the Wave, while Paulin (double, two RBIs), Ainslee Flynn (double) and Sophia Rotkiewicz (hit, RBI) were other key contributors.

Greenfield put up a seven-spot in the top of the fourth to turn a 2-0 lead into a lopsided margin. Next up is Saturday’s showdown with Turners Falls (1 p.m., Vets Field).

Girls tennis

Mohawk Trail 3, Frontier 2 — The Warriors won two of the three singles matches, led by Palmer King’s 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Frontier's Ella Sibley on Friday in South Deerfield.

Hazel Foucault took a 6-4, 6-0 win at second singles for the visitors, getting past Frontier’s Thanushi Ratnatuge. The Warriors’ first doubles team of Sawyer Thurber and Ben Russell snagged a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Aylen Shaw and Araceli McCoy.

Frontier’s Esther Ehle was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 3 singles over Mohawk Trail’s Kiera Taylor. The Redhawks won second doubles via forfeit.

Boys volleyball

Longmeadow 3, Frontier 0 – The Redhawks fell in straight sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-17, but co-head coach Courtney Parent said she was “proud of how hard the guys worked.”

Tavo Vincent-Warner tallied 21 assists and Aleks Carey led Frontier with 14 kills.

It was a dual meet split for the Greenfield and Mohawk Trail track and field teams on Thursday.

The Greenfield boys captured a 90-54 victory over the Warriors while the Mohawk Trail girls snagged a 123-18 victory over the Wave.
