ORANGE — It wasn’t looking good for the Mahar field hockey team during the third quarter against Turners Falls on Tuesday.

The Sens found themselves trailing 5-1 after the Thunder tallied twice in the opening two minutes of the half, dropping Mahar — searching for its first win of the season — into a deep hole.

Instead of giving up, the Senators fought back.

Ava DeJackome scored off an assist from Taylor Paluk to cut into the deficit with 10:09 to go in the third, and with 3:03 to play in the frame, DeJackome tallied again off an assist from Paluk to make it a 5-3 game going into the fourth quarter.

Mahar carried the momentum into the final 15 minutes. After a scramble in front of the Turners goal where Thunder goalie Conner Glennon made a number of saves, Carly Paluk was able to collect a rebound and fire it home to cut the lead to 5-4 with 9:20 to play.

With just under five minutes to play, Turners was whistled for a foul inside the circle which led to a Mahar penalty stroke. Shea Woods took it and buried the shot into the top left corner of the cage to tie the game.

Neither team scored the rest of the way, and the Valley League game finished in a 5-5 tie at the Woodward Complex.

“Overall it’s been a challenging season,” Senators coach Laurie Saisa said. “It was nice to see some hard work and perseverance pay off today. They never quit and that’s been our MO. We go down 4-0 in the first quarter and hang our heads. Today we were down but the difference was they picked their heads up. A few balls started falling our way and we were able to get back in it. It was nice to see that.”

After jumping out to a big lead, settling for a tie was tough for Turners (1-4-2), which felt it had the game in hand in the third.

“It’s tough,” Thunder coach Renee Tela said. “We started out well but then I don’t know what happened.”

Turners opened the scoring just 1:14 into the game, with Khalifa Sack smashing in a shot on an assist from Ella Guidaboni.

Mahar (0-5-1) answered with 5:28 to go in the first. Earning a corner, Woods sent in a pass to Taylor Paluk, who buried a shot to tie the game.

The Thunder closed the quarter strong. Guidaboni scored an unassisted goal following a corner and with 30 seconds to go in the first, she scored her second goal of the game to give Turners a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.

Ledwin Villafana scored both Thunder goals to open the third quarter, both unassisted on the rush.

After switching up the formation, Saisa said her team felt more comfortable which led to the five goals. Before Tuesday, Mahar had not scored in its first five games.

“It was eye opening to see it click,” Saisa said. “They’ve had to be so defensive minded. We play a 4-2 on the front and we changed it but they struggled to handle that. We changed it back today and everybody was happy.”

After challenging games against Western Mass. powers like Westfield and East Longmeadow, Saisa was also excited to play a competitive game on Tuesday.

“We’re playing teams where we’re in the same boat,” Saisa said. “Even if we don’t win, it feels like we’re in the game. It just feels better.”
