HAWLEY — Want a military dump truck? If you’ve got the money, one could be yours.
Hawley is using municibid.com, an online auction site for government surplus, to sell a 1990 BMY-Harsco M9229A2 6x6 military dump truck. The acceptance of bids from Massachusetts residents is scheduled to end on April 30, coincidentally the day before the start of National Military Appreciation Month. The auction page can be found at tinyurl.com/HawleyAuction. All proceeds go to the town.
“The Highway Department has acquired new vehicles. … We can’t have a bunch of trucks lying around,” Selectboard member Hussain Hamdan said. “We can’t keep every single thing that we want to keep. Space is at a premium.”
Hamdan explained the town acquired the dump truck through a U.S. Department of Defense program in 2016. He said the town was interested in getting it for emergency management purposes, such as in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. He said the vehicle was great for “any really hardcore road repairs” and for reaching remote areas.
However, Hamdan mentioned, the truck has issues with its tires, and one of them will no longer hold air. On top of that, the necessary tires are very expensive to replace, so the Selectboard voted unanimously to label it as surplus and put it up for auction.
The auction comes with a 9% buyer’s fee. The auction might be extended by two minutes to prevent sniping, the practice of placing an online auction bid as late as possible so that others don’t get a chance to make another bid.
