BUCKLAND — The Mohawk Trail girls basketball team did its job to earn its second win of the season on Thursday.
Hosting PVCICS, the Warriors rolled out to a 24-4 halftime lead and opened the third quarter on an 18-0 run to take a 42-8 lead into the fourth. Mohawk Trail went on to cruise to a 43-11 independent victory.
After an opening game loss to Franklin Tech, the Warriors knocked off Greenfield and made it two in a row with the win over the Dragons.
“Our first game against Tech we were coming off some illnesses,” Mohawk Trail coach Steve Bzomowski said. “They did some things that we weren’t ready for but we’re happy to have two wins in a row now. We go to Lee [Friday] night and it’ll be a bit of a different story than what we had tonight.”
It’s hard to imagine too many teams have a younger starting lineup than the Warriors, which featured an eighth grader, two freshmen, a sophomore and a senior on Thursday.
With such a youthful group, Bzomowski said he’s hoping to see them take steps forward each time out and so far, it’s a group that is learning quickly.
“I think we might be the youngest starting lineup in the state,” Bzomowski said. “We average a grade of about 9.8. It’s a learning experience but they’re a great group. They focus every day in practice and they get better every single day. When I’m talking in practice they all have great eye contact.
“They’re working really hard but some of these kids are coming right out of middle school basketball and now are playing varsity,” Bzomowski added.
