It was another tightly-contested contest between the rival Athol and Mahar boys basketball teams on Wednesday.
The Senators took a 22-16 lead at the half on the road at Mallet Gymnasium, maintained a 38-34 lead going into the fourth and held off the Bears in the final eight minutes to walk away with a 46-40 independent victory.
“It was a competitive close game all the way,” Athol coach Brian Patria said. “My guys played their hearts out all four quarters and after playing back-to-back intense games, fatigue might have played a role. Hats off to coach Softic and Mahar. They made plays and shots when they needed it. [Senator Jayden] Delgado was hard to defend. We will regroup and see if we can contend in the Western Mass. tournament.”
Delgado led the way with 14 points, Morgan Softic tallied 13 points, Marshall Ames tossed in 10 points while Derek Collins added nine points in the win for Mahar.
Ben Kearney recorded 11 points, Ethan Goodwin scored 10 points, Ethan Bacigalupo finished with eight points while Logan Cormier added five points for Athol.
Mahar 46, Hopkins 26 — Hayden Comeau tallied a 16 point, 12 rebound double-double for the Senators, who earned a Franklin County League North win over the Golden Hawks in Orange on Wednesday.
Taylor Paluk scored nine points, Thea Whitmore recorded eight points and 11 rebounds while Julia Hatch scored eight points in the victory for Mahar.
