A Herculean effort nearly enabled the Frontier girls basketball team to take down powerhouse Pittsfield Wednesday night.

The fifth-seeded Redhawks trailed the top-seeded Generals by just one point with under three minutes remaining in their Western Mass. Class B semifinal.

Pittsfield (19-1), which lost just once all season and also beat Springfield Central, was on the ropes on its home floor.

But the Generals found a way through, outscoring Frontier 13-5 over the final 2 minutes, 40 seconds to secure a 73-64 victory and a spot in the Class B final against No. 2 South Hadley.

Frontier, which won its quarterfinal game in the Berkshires when it took down Wahconah in the quarterfinals on Monday, closed out its regular season 17-3 overall, and now awaits its seeding in next week’s MIAA Division 4 tournament.

The Generals led 34-14 in the first half before Frontier got back within 36-29 at halftime. The hosts extended the lead to 57-44 after three quarters.

Frontier never went away. The Hawks stormed out of the gates in the fourth on a 15-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Addie Harrington and a Harper Modestow putback that got the visitors within 60-59 with 3:12 to play.

Pittsfield answered with a 3 before Modestow cut the deficit to 63-61 with a bucket inside with 2:27 to play. A Harrington jumper with 1:19 left had Frontier within 67-63, but Pittsfield survived in the final minute-plus, and hit free throws to punch its title-game ticket.
