The Frontier girls basketball team’s propensity for playing in tight, late game situations paid dividends on Monday.
The Redhawks played their best with the game on the line in their PVIAC Class B quarterfinal game against No. 4 Wahconah. Locked in a tie game with just over two minutes remaining, fifth-seeded Frontier scored the final 11 points of the game to pull away for a 57-46 victory in Dalton.
Frontier (16-2) will play at top-seeded Pittsfield in the Class B semifinal round on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
It was a tight game throughout as Frontier led 17-15 after one quarter but Wahconah flipped the script and held a 34-27 halftime advantage. Undaunted, the Hawks clawed back within 43-41 entering the fourth, and ultimately held the Warriors to just three points in the entire final period.
Locked in a 46-46 tie with 2:20 to play, Claire Kirkendall hit a 3-pointer to give Frontier the lead. Just 36 seconds later, Skyler Steele doubled the advantage when she drilled a 3 with 1:44 to go to make it 52-46.
Frontier’s ball-hawking defense cause problems for the Warriors, and Addie Harrington later stole the ball in the backcourt and converted a layup to all but seal the deal.
Steele led the way with 15 points, Harrington recorded 14 points, Olivia Machon finished with 11 points, Harper Modestow scored eight points and Kirkendall added seven points in the winning effort.
Lenox 52, Greenfield 19 — The eighth-seeded Green Wave were unable to pull off the upset on the road, falling to the top-seeded Millionaires in the Class C quarterfinals on Monday.
