GILL — The McCollum Hockey Arena at Northfield Mount Hermon School has been closed and a Friday girls varsity hockey game has been moved due to a fire that broke out in one of the four locker rooms Wednesday night.
According to NMH Director of Editorial Strategy and Services Maureen Turner, the fire did not damage the ice rink itself, but a boys locker room has smoke and water damage, and equipment inside has been destroyed. A Friday night girls varsity hockey game versus Worcester Academy has been moved to the Williston Northampton School in Easthampton.
“Our Athletics Department is working on any other schedule changes that might be necessary and on locating replacement equipment,” Turner wrote in an email Thursday, adding that the school’s “primary concern” is to minimize disruptions to the boys and girls hockey teams, and get them back on the ice.
Turner could not specify what equipment was lost as athletics staff members are still assessing the situation. She added that NMH is in contact with its insurance company regarding next steps.
While the cause of the fire was not immediately clear Wednesday night, the Gill Fire Department posted an update to Facebook on Thursday explaining that the fire is suspected to have originated near a propane wall-mounted heater and “preliminary results point toward an electrical issue.” Gill is working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Massachusetts State Police to continue investigation.
According to Gill Fire Chief William Kimball, NMH campus security reported smoke in the building, which is located just off Purple Road, at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.
When Gill firefighters arrived just after 7:45 p.m., they observed flames through a window and smoke exiting the roof on the southeast side of the building.
“The first arriving engine was able to knock down the fire, and the assistance from the mutual aid was able to overhaul and make sure it was fully extinguished,” Kimball said Wednesday night.

Firefighters and equipment came from Gill, Bernardston, Northfield, Montague Center, Greenfield, Erving, Turners Falls and South Deerfield, as well as the Vernon Fire Department in Vermont. Northfield EMS also responded.
Photos of the fire posted by the Gill Fire Department show smoke emerging from the uppermost corner of the roof, and the siding of the building burnt and rippled from the heat. A photo from inside the building shows the blackened interior of the locker room and another image shows a firefighter in the doorway as smoke pours out of the room.
“NMH is very grateful to the local first responders and our campus safety staff for their quick response and their care,” Turner wrote.
