GREENFIELD — Producer and assistant director Michael Haley, whose name has appeared in the credits of 60 feature films and 18 television movies, will speak at Greenfield Community College on Thursday about his journey from being a Berkshire Community College graduate to a Hollywood veteran.

“I was in the first class and it was the best education I ever got,” the Conway resident said of his education in Pittsfield during a phone interview Monday. “I’m part of this area, and I just wanted to promote to a lot of kids that this is what can happen to you if you keep your eyes open and do things. I never intended to get in the movie business, but that’s the way it went.”

Haley, who has collaborated with renowned directors such as Sidney Lumet, Sydney Pollack, Barry Levinson, Penny Marshall, Harold Ramis and Mike Nichols, will provide behind-the-scenes stories about the film industry, and his belief in the Murphy’s Law adage, “What can go wrong will go wrong.” His 30-year partnership with Nichols resulted in the creation of 13 films, such as “Biloxi Blues,” “Working Girl,” “Primary Colors,” “Angels in America” and “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Haley also appeared in the baseball film “A League of Their Own,” playing an umpire.

Crediting his community college mentors with giving him the skills he needed to succeed, Haley said he hopes to provide the same to GCC students as part of Thursday’s event, which is co-sponsored by the Department for Community Engagement and the GCC Foundation. The program will be held in the Stinchfield Lecture Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the event, which is open to the public with a recommended donation of $25, will benefit the Daniel J. Haley Scholarship Fund. The scholarship program, he mentioned, was created in honor of his nephew, an engineering major who was killed by a drunk driver two months before his graduation.

After speaking at GCC last year, Haley said most of those who attended particularly enjoyed hearing behind-the-scenes stories of his work with actors such as Katharine Hepburn, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep.

“The important thing is the stories about what happened behind the scenes. You know, I think now some people will say, ‘Oh, I remember ‘League of Their Own’ and ‘Groundhog Day,’ which are two movies that I did as an assistant director,” Haley said. “My main goal is to have fun and a couple of laughs. ... It’s not a lecture, it’s stories.”

Haley’s accolades include two Humanitas Prizes, the Christopher Award, a Directors Guild of America citation and an Emmy for “Angels in America.” Locally, Haley is involved with Greenfield’s theater troupe Rosie Caine and the Wilde Irish Women, and is active in local productions.
