CHARLEMONT — Berkshire Pizzeria is up for grabs, as owners Greg and Gaby Rowehl are ready to hang up their aprons and pass the business on to someone new.

Real estate agent Kaitlyn Giard said Berkshire Pizzeria has been a Charlemont staple since the Rowehls acquired the nearly 1,500-square-foot space at 72 Main St. (Route 2) in 2014. After 10 years of running the restaurant, the couple is ready to retire.

With roughly 6,000 vehicles driving past each day and tourists flocking to town to ski, bike and generally enjoy the outdoors, Giard said there are plenty of customers around and room for a new owner to grow the business.

Greg Rowehl said he and his wife have been cutting back on hours as they prepare to retire. As of late, the restaurant has only been open three days a week and has been operating with a limited menu.

Berkshire Pizzeria is listed for $475,000. Giard said there has been some interest in the business, but mostly from Boston restaurateurs and investors looking to grow and expand their own businesses. Giard said the Rowehls are hoping to find someone from the area who is invested in and cares about the community who could grow the business to its full potential.

“There’s a lot of locals that love the business and want to keep it small and locally owned, and keep it from becoming a chain,” Giard said.

Greg Rowehl said they are open to any offer, but they would prefer to sell the business to someone who wants the restaurant to remain a community pizzeria.

“Nothing’s done until the money is in the bank,” he said.

Giard said there’s no set timeline for when the business needs to be sold, but the Rowehls are hoping to be able to retire soon. Greg Rowehl noted he has a vintage Airstream trailer he is hoping to fix up and take across the country. While he and his wife have loved living and working in Charlemont, they are ready to enjoy retirement by traveling.
