GREENFIELD — The Garden Cinemas has penned a deal with MPI Media Group and Watermelon Pictures to offer a single showing of “The Encampments” on Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m.
“The Encampments” follows students at Columbia University who in 2024 launched a movement protesting the war in Gaza. The film features detained activist Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student active in the demonstrations who also served as a spokesperson for the group. He was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on March 8 and has been held in a detention center in Louisiana, where he faces deportation amid a legal fight over where his case should be heard.
Garden Cinemas co-owner Isaac Mass secured the deal while at CinemaCon, the official annual convention of Cinema United, in Las Vegas, where Hollywood studios, exhibitors and tech companies gather to present upcoming films and industry news.
“When Justin DiPietro reached out to me from MPI, I immediately knew that there would be many people in Franklin County that would want to see the film,” Mass said in a statement, adding that he knows the film is not without controversy, with many people considering the actions of Khalil and others to be antisemitic. Mass points to the theater’s relationship with the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival as evidence of the theater’s commitment to the Jewish community. “We see the Garden as a free speech zone and while ‘The Encampments’ is certainly provocative, it is an important part of the discussion, though not the only one.”
Tickets are $10.50 for adults or $8.50 for students, seniors and veterans.

“We are honored to bring our cooperative values and democratic decision-making process to the GBA board,” Carter said in a statement. “Our mission extends beyond solar — we are dedicated to fostering a resilient and thriving local economy, and we look forward to collaborating with fellow businesses to support Greenfield’s continued success.”
Hathaway added, “Greenfield’s forward-thinking momentum is growing, and it’s an exciting time for our fellow business owners to help define who we are today while cooperatively deciding where we’re headed. By working together in the GBA, we can build a stronger, more sustainable future for our community.”
