Snowy conditions to start the day produced low numbers Thursday on Day 4 of Massachusetts Shotgun Deer Hunting Season.

Franklin County stations reported just 29 deer checked on a day where snow led to school delays and cancelations. Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne had the most tags with 12.

Greenfield Elks Hoop Shoot

The Greenfield Elks Hoop Shoot is fast approaching once again.

The event is open to boys and girls ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2025). It will be held at Franklin County’s YMCA in Greenfield on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Registration is at 9 a.m., and the contest will begin at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Mike Blanchard (mikeblanchard78@gmail.com).

Running

Sawmill River 10K

Registration for the annual Sawmill River 10K has begun.

The Sawmill Run is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025 in Montague Center. The road race will begin promptly at 10 a.m. near the Village Common on Main Street. Race Day registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Montague Common Hall at 34 Main St. in Montague.

Divisions include Youth (17 yrs. & Under), Open (18-39 yrs.), Master (40-49 yrs.), Senior (50-59 yrs.), and Senior-Plus (60 yrs. & Up). Entry Fees are $30 (paid by noon Dec. 31) or $40 (thereafter). Hot and cold refreshments will be provided.
