After a strong start to its 2024-25 season, the Brick Church Music Series is closing out with a local string quartet.

The classical music series, which hosts concerts in the fall and spring, will end its season on Feb. 23, when it welcomes the Wistaria String Quartet to the First Church of Deerfield, 71 Old Main St., at 3 p.m. The series serves as a fundraiser for the church and a $20 suggested donation is requested at the door.

Brick Church Music Series Coordinator Jean Pitman Turner said Wistaria was founded right here in western Massachusetts and has built up a reputation for itself.

“All of the musicians are living in the Pioneer Valley and they share a commitment to highlighting works of local composers,” Pitman Turner said, adding the group is “fairly well-known in our greater community.”

The Wistaria String Quartet, which was formed in 2013, is composed of violinists Sarah Briggs and Kaila Graef, violist Gregory Diehl and celloist Karla Knapp. Pitman Turner said the group’s members have all performed at the First Church of Deerfield in the last few years, but never together as a quartet.

“We’ve had them at our church, not as a quartet, but as separate performers … They’re young folks, but they’re doing extremely well and are performing in many areas in and around Massachusetts,” Pitman Turner said. “I’m anxious to have our audience hear them as an entity. We’re looking forward to it.”

The group, according to their website, have strong ties to Amherst College and frequently perform new works composed by students and faculty. Their name comes from the Wistaria Chamber Music Society, which sponsored their participation in concerts at the Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke.

In Deerfield on Feb. 23, the Wistaria String Quartet will perform pieces by Scarlatti, Haydn, Schulhoff, Beach, Slapin and Tillis.

As the Brick Church Music Series prepares to end its season, Pitman Turner said the 2024-25 edition was a great success. The first show was held in September and featured award-winning organist Aaron Tan, who was then followed up in the October show by a trio of performers from Decoda, a New York-based collective of classical musicians.

The next set of Brick Church musical performances will return in September and Pitman Turner said the lineups have been prepared.

Following the concert, a reception will be held at the Caswell Library on Deerfield Academy’s campus. Handicap parking is available behind the church.
