Since the MIAA All-State Wrestling Tournament returned in 2022 following a hiatus due to COVID-19, eight Recorder area wrestlers have qualified for the meet but just one has placed.
Will that change this weekend?
Four locals will be traveling to Methuen High School to compete in the 2025 All State tourney, which begins on Friday and wraps up on Saturday.
Mahar’s Abduli Gilmore is the only local who has placed at All-States, doing so in 2023 where he took seventh in his weight class. Gilmore — who won the MIAA Div. 3 state title that year at 113 pounds — entered last week’s Div. 3 championship at Foxborough High School as the No. 6 seed at 106 but won his first three matches of the tournament to reach the finals. He ultimately settled for second at 106.
The senior will be looking to continue the momentum built at the state meet on Friday. The preliminary bracket has Gilmore scheduled to face off against Chelmsford senior Mustafa Lubowa, who took fifth at D1 states.
Gilmore wasn’t the only local to take second at Div. 3 states last weekend.
Franklin Tech’s Dillon Laffond went into the state tourney as the No. 5 seed at 285, but like Gilmore won his first three matches — including an upset over top-seeded Nathan Hartunian of Wayland — to reach the finals, where he ultimately took second place.
Laffond, a junior, is scheduled in the preliminary bracket to take on Arlington junior Brady Bekkenhuis, who placed fourth at D1 states.
