GILL — After decades of service with the all-volunteer Gill Fire Department, Fire Chief Gene Beaubien is ready to retire as he turns 70 on Monday, Jan. 27.
MDAR survey to tabulate farmers’ weather-related losses
The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) is seeking information about weather-related losses in 2023 and 2024 from farmers across the state as it prepares to report damages to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which will split up $220 million in relief funding among eight states.

My Turn: When the buzzer sounded
The three-story (if you counted the attic) house at 21 School St. in Bridgewater, in eastern Massachusetts, was a large Victorian. Long windows flanked an impressive front door. The walkway from the street led to a wraparound porch. But, to get to my rented room, you had to walk around the back. Here was a very small wooden two-story building that, if you didn’t know any better, appeared to be just glued to the back wall of the larger house. At one time, were these servant quarters?

The recent pandemic era nudged even more people to take up practices like baking sourdough bread, knitting, building furniture, and a mind-boggling number of other pursuits. Tutorials are readily available through libraries and on the internet, but there are limits, right? We’re unlikely to find hobbyists handcrafting cars, building computers from scratch, or making their own shoes.
