I have lived in Greenfield since 1975 and over the years have thoroughly enjoyed reading The Recorder every morning. Over the years economies of scale have led to many necessary and often painful changes in how our local newspaper is staffed and run. The leadership team has made these changes to streamline production and save money.
And yet, during this time when no public events can be scheduled, and restaurants and businesses are almost all closed, The Recorder’s advertising revenue is depleted. In spite of this, the Recorder has continued to provide us with the news that we need in order to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, including ways to assist our fellow residents of Franklin County.
In recent years, The Recorder the has continued in a time when all newspapers are struggling financially. Without advertising income, I worry that our newspaper cannot continue without some help from us, its readers.
Many have recognized that need. Greening Greenfield, a town citizen group, recently contributed a sizable amount to The Recorder as a gift. In addition to printing valuable news around the county and beyond, The Recorder, has been very helpful in printing Greening Greenfield’s announcements and campaigns over the years. With Greening Greenfield’s action as an example, I have also made a personal contribution to The Recorder to help with their bottom line.
Yes, there are so many who need additional financial help at this time, and each one of us has to make the decision of where to put the dollars. I honor each person’s decision, but I also want to point out the need for our community to keep its newspaper intact. We all benefit from its news coverage, and I invite you to join me in supporting it.
