Justin Carey had three hits and four RBIs Sunday afternoon and Manny’s TV & Appliance knocked off DiFranco Realty, 9-6, in a Tri-County League men’s amateur baseball game at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.
Manny’s was able to match DiFranco’s hot start to the game as the TV & Appliance Men scored three times in the bottom of the first inning after DiFranco took a 3-0 lead in the top of the frame. Then the local nine scored four times in the bottom of the second after DiFranco posted a two-spot in the top of the inning.
“We hit the ball well early and matched them right back,” Manny’s player/manager Eric Libardoni said. “The middle of our order was 6-for-6 in the first two innings.”
That included Carey, who continually delivered timely hits throughout. After Manny’s took the 7-5 lead into the third, starting and winning pitcher Devin Rhodes settled down and allowed just one run over the final five innings, finishing with six strikeouts while allowing 10 hits and two walks.
“He didn’t have his best stuff but his changeup was pretty good so he kept them off balance,” Libardoni said. “He had runners on base all game but he worked himself out of some jams.”
Kyle Platner continued to hit the ball well for Manny’s Sunday with three hits, including a double, and an RBI. Greg Vouros also had three hits in the win. T.J. Meyer added one hit and an RBI, and Joe Warner doubled.
Matt Plasse worked five innings in the loss, striking out two and walking one.
Sandy Koufax
Matthew Gardner chucked a complete-game shutout to lead Greg’s Auto Body/Polish American Citizens Club to a 12-0 win over Ludlow in the Sandy Koufax Baseball season finale Saturday at Headmaster’s Field in Deerfield.
Greg’s finished on a nine-game winning streak to secure the No. 2 seed in the league tournament, which begins Thursday when it hosts a first-round game at Headmaster’s Field.
Garrett DeForest had two doubles and three RBIs in the win while Ryan Antes singled and scored twice. Bryan Baumann singled and scored once and Gardner and Thomas Graves each singled.
Greenfield 9-U Tournament
Greenfield advanced to the winners’-bracket final of the five-team 9-and Under Cal Ripken Baseball District Tournament it hosted Sunday at Lunt Field before falling 24-7 to eventual champion Northampton, then falling to Hadley, 4-3, in the losers’-bracket final to finish third.
Hadley advanced to the finals by eliminating Greenfield and, needing to win two straight to wrestle the championship away from unbeaten Northampton, fell 7-2 in Game 1 to finish second.
Greenfield pitchers Brady Booska and Jackson Campbell were sharp on the hill, both working eight innings, during which Booska surrendered four runs and Campbell gave up five.
Booska was the top Greenfield hitter with a 7-for-11 weekend, including two doubles, while teammate Lily Day went 6-for-10 with three doubles and a triple and Campbell went 6-for-11 with a two-bagger. Meanwhile, Luca Siano and William Aisworth went 3-for-8 and Devin Dubie and Sovann Neoun went 2-for-8.
Greenfield’s tourney record was 2-2.
CC of G Club Champ
Don Foberg carded a three-day score of 204 to win the Championship Flight of the Country Club of Greenfield’s Club Championship over the weekend.
Foberg found himself tied for third place after the first day with a 69 but shot 67 on Day 2, which was two strokes better than anyone elss, vaulting him into the lead. He then shot 68 on Sunday — the third and final day of the event — which was the second-best score of the day and gave him the title.
KC Finley came in second with a 206 and Chris Bourbeau took third with a 208. Nate Burdock and David Kennedy tied for fourth at 209 and John Varner and Jake Willis tied for sixth at 215. Mike Johnson (216), Jack Jackman (217) and Will Conant (218) rounded out the top 10.
Roy Emerson won the President Cup with a two-day score of 152 while Dan Finn and Jim Hawkins tied for second at 154. Casey Fahey and Dave Perlmutter tied for fourth at 158.
The Vice President’s Cup (low net) went to Dave McDonald, who shot a 128. Gary Stacy was second at 133. Stan Sadowski was third at 134.
Art Dufresne Memorial
Mark Graves, Bill Buck, Mark Eaton and Tom Miner finished nine-under par to win the Art Dufresne Memorial Golf Tournament at the Ashfield Community Golf Course on Saturday.
Matt Abbott, Bob Jablonski, Steve Helgerson and Mark Williams came in second at 8 under. Terry Norwood, Diane O’Connell, Robin Hartnett and Dave Gangloff were third at 6 under. Hartnett won the women’s longest drive on No. 4 while Ryan Pease won the men’s competition. Barb Ladd was closest to the pin on No. 5 at 6 feet, 3 inches for the women’s side. Bob Jillson was closest for the men at 9-5. Graves was closest on No. 9 at 22-1.
Wheeler sets record
Allison Wheeler set a Montague Bluefish girls’ 13-14 division record in the 500-yard freestyle and the Bluefish edged the Ludlow Sea Lions, 163½-141½ in a Pioneer Valley Junior Swim League meet in Turners Falls.
Wheeler won the 500 free in 7 minutes, 5.83 seconds to break the previous team record in the event. She also won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:29.54. Teammate Catherine Bezio also had a good showing in the division, winning the 100 back (1:27.61) and 200 free (2:45.93), and placing second in the 500 free (7:13.18). On the boys’ side, Cameron Bradley won three events, taking the 100 fly (1:08.45), 100 back (1:11.85) and 200 IM (2:37.52).
In boys’ 11 and 12 action, Iggy Passiglia won the 50 fly (43.45), 100 breast (1:49.02) and 200 IM (3:24.90) while Dylan Bliss won the 100 back (1:33.07) and was second in both the 100 breast (1:55.17) and 100 free (1:19.66). In boys’ 15 to 18 results, Nick Taylor won both the 100 free (1:06.56) and 200 free (2:42.93).
Tristan Bliss won three events in the boys’ 8-and-under division, capturing the 25 back (21.07), 50 free (45.93) and 100 IM (2:00.26). Aiden St. Hilaire won the 25 fly (29.51), 25 breast (34.83) and was second in the 100 IM (2:03.75) while Liam Bliss was second in both the 25 back (31.11) and 50 free (1:02.48). On the girls’ side of the division, Josie Sabelawski won the 50 free (46.89) and was second in the 25 breast (33.08), while Madison St. Hilaire was first in the 25 breast (32.38) and second in the 25 fly (37.89). Breanna Kempf won the 25 back (28.19) and was second in the 50 free (57.69), while Wenny Passiglia took first in the 25 fly (31.84).
Ella Sabelawski led the girls’ 9 and 10 division with wins in the 100 free (1:29.22) and 50 back (49.79). Ava Fortin was first in the 50 breast (52.70), second in the 50 fly (55.81) and third in the 100 IM (1:48.61) and Stella Turowsky-Ganci won the 100 IM (1:42.12) and was second in the 100 free (1:36.05). On the boys’ side, Ben Tardif won both the 100 IM (1:46.79) and the 50 fly (54.88).
