Western Massachusetts Woodlands for Wildlife will host a walk at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 24, at 234 Main Poland Road in Conway. This easy field walk and discussion will highlight programs available to landowners who want to improve bird and wildlife habitat on their land.
Landowner Tony Borton will take participants on a tour through grasslands and forests that provide critical food and shelter for birds and other wildlife. Experts from Mass. Wildlife and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation will be there to talk about wildlife species in decline, as well as management programs designed to enhance wildlife habitat. Participants will review a forest stewardship plan and see how plan recommendations can benefit wildlife, while working to meet a landowner’s wishes.

Explore one of the area’s most unique habitats on Sunday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn about the fascinating ecology of this place, search for insect eating plants and other plants and animals that make their home in the bog. Stroll leisurely on level ground and boardwalks.
The bog is a relict of more northerly habitats that is preserved in a cold pocket of the Berkshires. The keystone plant for the bog is Sphagnum — a moss that forms the substrate on which other unique plants grow. It is owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy and the Five Colleges.
