Thank you for publishing Lynne Kelsey’s informative My Turn column (” What do seniors need versus what center management wants? ” Aug. 1 ). And thank you to Ms. Kelsey for having the patience and tenacity to sit through meetings and get the facts. Any of us concerned about how our taxes are spent should be willing to do so; unfortunately, few of us are.
Tax expenditures are a zero sum game. A town’s use of tax dollars for one thing decreases the town’s ability to spend for something else. And if taxes go up, the taxpayer has no choice but to adjust their budget accordingly. For many fixed-income residents this isn’t easy.
For the welfare of all of us, it’s critical to insure that tax expenditures are addressing problems in the most effective way. It’s important to ask informed questions; this is what makes democracy work. Thank you to Ms. Kelsey for being willing to get the facts and ask the questions. She’s being a good steward of our tax dollars.
