Summer Class Registration: Classes for youth include swim and gymnastics lessons (ages 1 to 12), track and field (ages 2 to 16), and basketball (grades seven to 10). Classes for adults include water fitness and therapy, strength training, diabetes care and blood pressure self-monitoring. The summer session runs from June 24 through Aug. 18. Sports Camps: The Y offers eight weeks of sports camps for boys and girls of all abilities ages 6 to 14. The campers use the Y’s air-conditioned gym, game room, Kid Fit Center and pool. The sports offered are basketball, recess games, Gaga/dodge ball, flag football and multi-sport. There are half-day options for 9 a.m. to noon or noon to 4 p.m., and full-day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The early care (6 to 9 a.m.) and late care (4 to 6 p.m.) options make summer child care easy. The full-day campers get a free lunch provided by the Greenfield Public Schools summer food program. A limited amount of financial aid is available, which can cover up to 70 percent of camp fees. Gymnastics Camps: Eight weeks of Y gymnastics camps runs from June 24 through Aug. 16. Half-day camps from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or noon to 4 p.m., or full-day 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with early (6 to 9 a.m.) and late (4 to 6 p.m.) care available. These camps are for boys and girls ages 4 to 14. The camp is held in the Y’s gymnastic center. The camps also have a swim lesson and recreational swim every day. Prescribe the Y Program: Summer is a good time for people to ask their primary care provider for a free referral to the Y’s Prescribe the Y program (RxY). At the referral appointment, a Y fitness specialist goes over each person’s wellness goals and then recommends the proper Y program to start with. RxY is a 12-week starter wellness program with lots of Y staff support to help each patient start to feel the benefits of regular exercise. RxY costs $139 and financial aid is available. Summer Preschool: The YMCA operates a year-round preschool with two classrooms for 3- to 5-year-olds. The school provides a good mix of education, social/emotional development, physical education, swimming and play. The school operates 50 weeks per year, even on snow days. Camp Apex: Since 1952, the Camp Apex staff have provided area boys and girls with fun, safe, outdoor summer activities. Camp Apex has a solar heated pool, hiking trails, 100-foot tube slide, Gaga ball, archery range, ball field, craft and nature centers, and lots of shelters for rainy days. The camp runs from June 24 to Aug. 23 and is for 5- to 14-year-olds. There is early and late care from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free lunches are provided by the Greenfield Public Schools summer food program. YMCA Summer Basketball Clinics: Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m., June 20 to Aug. 15. The YMCA will be holding basketball clinics for boys and girls in grades eight to 12. There will be 30 minutes of skills practice followed by an hour of game time in the Y’s air-conditioned gym. Each week, a different skill will be worked on.
