SUNDERLAND — There were no surprises in Sunderland on Saturday, as every candidate on the town election ballot stood uncontested.
Robert T. Duby was re-elected as moderator, and David J. Pierce will return for another three-year term as selectman. Wendy M. Houle, in her 18th year as town clerk, was re-elected to a three-year term.
Polls at Sunderland Elementary School were open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Houle explained the town clerk is the town’s chief elected official and is in charge of running elections, maintaining vital statistics of the town, keeping records, maintaining bylaws, swearing in new officials and issuing dog licenses, among other duties.
“That’s why it’s a fun job — you’re always doing something different,” she said Saturday.
Houle said 60 of Conway’s 2,348 registered voters, or 2.5 percent, showed up to the polls.
“It’s predictable. In some people’s minds, there’s nothing to vote for. The expectation is that the people on the ballot are going to win,” she said, adding that there were also no ballot questions.
Houle mentioned, however, the voter turnout was still lower than she expected.
Also elected to three-year terms (unless otherwise noted) were: James Kowaleck, assessor; Judith L. Pierce, Frontier Regional School Committee; Jessica Marsh Wissemann, Planning Board, five years; Michael A. Wissemann, Riverside Cemetery Trustee; Elizabeth Ann Berry, library trustee; David Michael Wissemann, library trustee; Justine J. Rosewarne, library trustee; and Kenneth L. Kushi, town park trustee.
