DEERFIELD — A natural gas line was struck near an area of new construction at Deerfield Academy in Old Deerfield, but there was no danger to the public.

An odor could be smelled in the vicinity as Deerfield and Greenfield fire personnel responded near the school’s tennis courts. Berkshire Gas was also called to assess the situation. Fire crews left around 11:30 a.m., while multiple Berkshire Gas trucks stayed on scene.

Police were directing traffic on Main Street in the vicinity of Memorial Street. Construction crews could be seen near the tennis courts, and there were yellow “buried gas line” flags throughout the construction site. After the fire crews left, construction crews appeared to resume work.

A Deerfield police officer on the scene directing traffic was unable to give any additional information at the time.
