GREENFIELD — Two finalists have been chosen from among four candidates hoping to take over as city clerk.

Kathryn Scott and Margaret Nartowicz were named as finalists after a round of interviews last week. According to City Council President Karen “Rudy” Renaud, the council is expected to pick the candidate to replace current City Clerk Deborah Tuttle later this month. Tuttle retires in July.

Scott and Nartowicz were named finalists after Renaud, with City Council’s Vice President Penny Ricketts and Secretary Wanda Pyfrom, interviewed four candidates over the past week or so. A total of 15 people applied.

Candidates

Scott is the administrative assistant for the City Council under Tuttle, and is an administrative assistant part-time for Northfield police, according to Tuttle. Tuttle said Scott has been with Greenfield for over 20 years.

Nartowicz, of Deerfield, said she is the town administrator for Rutland, a town in Worcester County with a population of 8,527, according to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Nartowicz worked for Amherst for 15 years until 2003, including five years as town clerk. She also worked as Sunderland town administrator from 2005 until taking the position in Rutland in 2015.

The tough decision

Renaud said she, Ricketts and Pyfrom will be conducting the final interviews with the two candidates before Wednesday’s council meeting, beginning at 5:15 p.m. at Greenfield High School. The interviews are open to the public.

Renaud expects a decision to be made by the council’s May 24 meeting.

The three councilors have been part of a selection committee to replace Tuttle, who is expected to retire July 9.

The city clerk is appointed through and can be fired or reprimanded by the council, though hiring and wages are done through the city human resources office.

The position’s salary range is $61,419 to $71,475. Duties include records and license management, overseeing elections and providing legislative and clerical assistance to boards and commissions in the city, including the council.
