Five golfers broke 50 as Franklin County Technical School snuck past McCann Technical School to keep its undefeated start to the season alive Thursday afternoon.
The host Eagles received strong play from the bottom of the lineup to edge the Hornets, 12½-11½, in a Bi-County West golf match at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Hunter Sessions (43), Nate Pelletier (46) and Mike Patnode (48) combined to take 9½ out of a possible 12 points in the bottom three spots of the lineup for Tech (8-0, 6-0).
Sessions and Travis Cutting tied for the low round of the day for Tech with 43s, and Cutting split his match at No. 1 in earning two points. Mike McGoldrick shot 45 at No. 3 in the win.
The Eagles host Sabis International Charter School Tuesday.
Frontier 19½, Hopkins 4½ — Five of the six starters carded rounds of 45 or better, leading Frontier Regional School to a 19½-4½ victory over Hopkins Academy in a Suburban West golf match Thursday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Bryan Baumann and Kalen Evans each shot 41 to sweep four points apiece at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, while Mikey Corduff also shot 41 at No. 1 to win 1½ points for the Red Hawks (6-4, 6-1).
Porter Clancy shot 44 at No. 5 to snag all four points, while Rowan Blair was the fifth player to shoot 45 or better after carding a 45.
Frontier tangles with Amherst Regional High School today at 3 at Cherry Hill.
Mohawk 22, Central 2 — Andy Robertson earned medalist honors after shooting a round of 47, and Will Guyette was one shot back with a 48 to power Mohawk Trail Regional High School to a 22-2 win over Springfield Central High School in a Bi-County West golf match Thursday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Shelburne Falls.
Both players swept all four points in their matches for the Warriors (3-6, 3-3). Tristan Keyser-Parker also won four points at No. 4 after shooting 51, while Triston LaCross shot 57 at No. 1 and swept his four points.
Anthony Moffatt (53) and Aiden Drury (61) took three points apiece in the win.
Monson 23½, Turners Falls ½ — Kyle Kucenski scored the lone half-point for Turners Falls High School, carding a round of 51 at No. 1, but host Monson High School captured a 23½-½ victory in Bi-County East golf action Thursday at Quaboag Valley Golf Course in Monson.
Brian Poirier was next for Turners with a 60, while Joey Mosca (64), Tyler Noyes (66) and Joe Kochan (72) also competed on Thursday.
Ware 13½, Greenfield 10½ — Ryan Cote (47) and Hunter Roberts (49) broke 50, but Greenfield High School was unable to knock off Ware High School in a 13½-10½ Bi-County East defeat Thursday at Dunroamin Country Club in Gilbertville.
Gabe Larouche took 3½ out of four possible points at No. 3 for Greenfield (1-5, 1-5) after a round of 54. Connor Pedigree won three points at No. 6 (54).
Palmer 18, Mahar 6 — Andrew Finch scored a team-high 2½ points out of the No. 6 spot, but Mahar Regional School dropped an 18-6 decision to visiting Palmer High School in a Suburban West golf match Thursday at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol.
Treyton Pasakinskas posted the low round of the day for the Senators (5-5, 3-3), firing a 47, while Corey Sanderson was one stroke back (48) at No. 1. Brandon Green scored two points at No. 4 after a round of 52.
Palmer improved to 8-2, 5-1 overall with the win. Mahar travels to play Pioneer Valley Regional School Tuesday.
Greenfield 4, South Hadley 1 — Olivia Joy’s hat trick helped Greenfield to a 4-1 Valley League field hockey victory Thursday in South Hadley.
Joy broke a 1-1 tie with two goals 36 seconds apart near the midpoint of the second half to put the Green Wave (6-2 overall, 4-1 Valley) ahead to stay. Raegan Hickey added a goal with five seconds left on a reverse chip off an assist from Audrey Bresciano to finish the scoring.
Joy got the scoring started in the first half when she was sitting on the left post and received a pass through the circle from Hickey to give the Wave a lead just 4 minutes, 39 seconds into the game. South Hadley tied the game with 9:28 to play in the first half when Emma Rahilly scored an unassisted goal. That score carried into the second half.
The Wave went ahead on Joy’s second of the game with 16:04 to play when she took a pass through the circle from Bresciano and buried it. She then scored on an assist from Hickey with 15:28 to go for a two-goal cushion.
“She was ready and waiting over on the past today,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “The left side was open a lot today and we weren’t capitalizing on it enough. When we finally did, Olivia was ready for it.”
Nikki Miner had a big day defensively to lead the Green Wave. Greenfield outshot South Hadley, 9-8. Lizzy Howland made eight saves in the win, while Brittany Cote made five saves in the South Hadley net.
Southwick 3, Turners 2 — Southwick-Tolland Regional High School scored three unanswered goals in the second half to come from behind and beat Turners Falls, 3-2, in a Bi-County League field hockey game Thursday evening in Turners Falls.
Turners Falls (4-4-1) led 2-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Cassidhe Wozniak, the second of which was assisted by Lucy Postera.
The Rams stormed back in the second half as Sydney Gorman scored back-to-back unassisted goals to tie the game, and Emily Martin struck for the game-winner with 1:19 to play on an assist from Alex Grimaldi.
Clare Stratton made 14 saves to earn the win, while Haleigh Greene finished with 20 saves in the loss.
Turners Falls hosts Palmer High School today at 4.
Holyoke 6, Mahar 0 — Katie Keane and Yesenia Lorenzo each scored twice Thursday and Holyoke High School defeated Mahar, 6-0, in a Bi-County League field hockey game in Holyoke.
Bridget Healy and Cassidy Lawrence each scored once in the win. Ella Courchesne had two assists, while Liza Keane and Lawrence picked up one helper apiece.
Holyoke outshot the Senators, 14-3. Hannah Birch made six saves and Belle Marigliano made two saves in a combined effort in the Mahar net in the loss.
Athol 2, FC Tech 0 — Eighth-grader Christa Cucchi had a goal and an assist in the second half and Athol High School picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 Tri-County League field hockey win over Franklin Tech Thursday in Athol.
The game was scoreless in the second half when Cucchi scored on an assist from Sadey Lehtomaki. Cucchi then set up Hudson Carlson on a corner for the second goal of the game. Athol improved to 1-5-2 and remained unbeaten (1-0-2) in TCL action.
“This is a big win for us,” Athol coach Emily Hall said. “We had the ball in front of the net for most of the first half but couldn’t make a connection to get the ball in. We passed the ball better in the second half, and passed it across the net.”
Ryley Pond stopped all three shots she faced to earn the shutout. Kailynn Mason-Emond stopped six shots for the Eagles, who dropped to 0-5-2 overall.
Frontier 3, Amherst 1 — Despite dropping the opening set, Frontier Regional School stormed back to capture the final three sets and earn a key 21-25, 25-13, 25-9, 25-19 victory over Amherst Regional High School in a matchup of PVIAC Eastern teams Thursday night at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Ella Deane recorded 35 assists in the win for Frontier (7-2, 4-0), putting her just seven away from 1,000 for her career. Lauren Davenport had a team-high 16 kills for the Red Hawks, while Selayna Bathurst and Ashley Telega had seven kills apiece. Hailey Orloski contributed six kills, while Grace Randall was a menace from the service line with 10 aces.
Bathurst and Deane registered 15 digs apiece to pace the defensive effort. Frontier accumulated 66 digs as a team against Amherst (4-2, 1-2).
The Red Hawks travel to East Longmeadow High School Monday night for an independent match at 6.
FC Tech 3, Greenfield 0 — Jocelyn Holloway dropped in nine aces to go with seven kills and four digs, and Franklin County Technical School picked up an impressive 25-10, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Greenfield High School in an independent volleyball match played Thursday night in Turners Falls.
Raegan Fiske contributed three aces, three assists, two kills and three digs to the cause for the Eagles (4-4), while Tori Profit registered four aces. Tech has won four of its last five matches after an 0-3 start.
Greenfield (1-6) was paced defensively by Casey Noyes’ nine digs. Ravin Graves had four kills and Hannah Mailloux put down three kills to go with two digs.
Tech hosts Springfield School of Science & Technology today while Greenfield hosts Belchertown High School on Monday night.
