The Sept. 1 state primary for Governor’s Council offers us in the four western Massachusetts counties the chance to elect Mike Fenton as our District 8 representative.
I support Mike Fenton for the councilor position. He is a practicing lawyer who guided me through difficult business negotiations. He helped me clarify my goals and legal options, earning my trust in his intelligence, acumen and foresight.
Most citizens are unaware of the Governor’s Council. It is a critical office. The councilors approve appointments of judges and other judicial officials. They also authorize direct payments from the Treasury.
I interviewed Mike to understand why he’s running and how big the problems are. He told me, “Western Mass does not have a single representative on the Supreme Judicial Court, the Parole Board or the Appellate Tax Board. Local courts have been in crisis due to lack of a pipeline to get seats filled.”
Judge and other important justice system vacancies have increased, causing a logjam of untried cases.
Mike said, “The court matters to everyone. It’s not just about public safety, although that is a big issue. … It’s also divorce, civil suits, probate estate settlements, personal injuries. Everyone will interact with the court system as one point in their life. And it usually is a life-changing event.”
Mike is a staunch advocate for social justice and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Mike is an adjunct professor at Western New England University School of Law where he, alongside others, founded the Center for Social Justice.
When I met Mike, I had no idea he’s been honored by several organizations for his legal and community activities. His supporters in the justice system want to see a western Massachusetts councilor who knows the workings of the courts and how appointments succeed.
