The Frontier boys basketball team defeated Keene, 44-27, to capture the DRIVE Hoops Summer League varsity championship on Friday night at Stoneleigh-Burnham.
Ty Skroski led Frontier with 14 points. Skroski also manned up Keene’s Ty Stanley, who scored 26 points in the semifinals. Stanley ended up with six points. The defense swarmed Stanley whenever he made it into the paint.
“I think we all played excellent defense on him,” Skroski said. “It was a unit.”

Frontier led 31-15 at halftime. The lead ballooned to as high as 19 points in the second half. A couple empty possessions allowed the Blackbirds to inch a little closer. Skroski’s take into the paint with one minute, 48 seconds gave the Redhawks a 17-point lead.
There was some turmoil throughout the summer, but the Redhawks found their way at the best time.
“We’ve been in the gym a lot,” Skroski said. “All of us together. Through the summer league we gone through some tribulations. But we all just fought through it and came together as one.”
Dean Gray had 13 points for Frontier. Gray did a lot of work on the glass and contributed to the defensive effort when the ball leaked into the paint. Landon Lavallee played an aggressive game, finishing with 11 points.
Kimie Taylor chipped in with four points.
Orange 64, Hampshire Regional 57 — In the Drive Hoops League junior varsity final, Orange came out on top over Hampshire. Lee Cruz (12 points), Colby-Manjourea-Cortright (12 points) and Landon Sheldon (10 points) all reached double-figures in the wire-to-wire win for the Senators.
Running
Spencer Knickerbocker won the Northfield Road Race on July 30. Knickerbocker finished the 5K race in 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Dan Mickus (18:32), Paul Hake (21:03), Mike Townsley (21:16) and Leo McDonald (22:08) rounded out the top five. Claudia Vearling and Courtney Lawler (24:51) finished the race simultaneously in ninth place. 29 runners and eight walkers participated.
Co-Ed
Liberty Tax Sharks 20, Posada’s Tavern 12 —Trevor Thomas, Che Christi (two RBIs), Cody Willor (two RBIs) and Taylor Struthers (four RBIs) each had three hits in the win for the Sharks on July 30. Struthers connected on a homer and added a double. Marcy Conway (three RBIs) and Heather Gibson both added two hits. Jacob Christi also left the yard, finishing with two RBI.
Nino Rodriguez (two RBI) and Jacob Graveline both had four hits for Posada’s Tavern. Rachael Renaud and Emilie Brodeur chipped in with two hits each. Brian Sicard drove in five RBI.
