The two July 24 cover stories about the ongoing drought in Massachusetts were great — clear, informative, and useful. They reminded me of some things I already knew (like it’s always important to conserve water, even when we’re not in a drought), explained some things I’d wondered about (like the rationale behind the mandatory water restriction signs that seem to pop up randomly), and delved into some of the bigger implications of a complicated and evolving challenge that affects all of us. This is what local news media can do really well and I’m heartened to see this kind of in-depth reporting. As both the climate crisis and political polarization around this issue worsen, we need all the solid and thoughtful information we can get!
