SHELBURNE FALLS — The Bridge of Flowers will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the corner of Main and Water streets.
At the plant sale, which will be held rain or shine, attendees can find perennials that normally adorn the Bridge of Flowers, as well as annuals, some of which are donated from private gardens and local nurseries. Proceeds will go toward bridge maintenance, upkeep and anything else that requires spending money on the Bridge of Flowers.
“Once again we’ll offer a beautiful array of annuals for your pots and window boxes,” Bridge of Flowers Committee Chair Annette Szpila said in a statement. “We are so grateful for Fairview Farms and LaSalle Florists and Greenhouses for growing them with such care and attention.”
The Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club will offer a bake sale at the event, featuring homemade cookies, muffins, scones and bread, along with coffee and bottled water. The bake sale opens 30 minutes before the plant sale at 8:30 a.m. The Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club is the parent organization to the Bridge of Flowers Committee, and all proceeds from the bake sale will support the club’s scholarship fund.
A variety of vendors will also be in attendance, selling maple goods, honey bee products, paintings, cards, dahlia tubers, ceramics and more.
“We have vendors, a food booth, beautiful annuals and perennials from A to Z — asters to zizia aurea — and so many in between,” Plant Sale Chair and Bridge of Flowers Committee Vice Chair Lynda Leitner said in a statement. “We have many native plants and new varieties of primroses and woodland plants.”
When the sale ends, there will be an opportunity for people to become members of the Blossom Brigade, a group of volunteers who work with Carol DeLorenzo and Elliston Bingham, the Bridge of Flowers head gardener and assistant gardener, respectively. These volunteers maintain the bridge throughout the season.
