MONTAGUE — In a meeting of two of the top tennis players in Franklin County, Olivia Wolbach of Turners Falls defeated Amy Mihailicenco of Greenfield 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Greenfield girls tennis team picked up Mihailicenco, however, securing the team victory over the Thunder, 3-2, in a Tri County North matchup. Greenfield lost to Turners Falls earlier this season.
“It was nice to get the win today,” Greenfield coach Alexis Silk said. “My second doubles keeps pulling out the wins for us. They are the ones that keep locking it in. Second singles has been super consistent.”
Greenfield’s Karinna Kostov beat Kenzie Flaxington 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. At No. 2 doubles, Stella Longe and Clara Kelsey took the victory over Keira Feeley and Viv Rosa, 6-0, 6-4.
Wolbach had some service issues in the first set against Mihailicenco, but recovered with a better second set at the baseline.
“She (Wolbach) played up to her standards,” Turners Falls coach Vic Gonzalez said. “She had to push a little bit to get it done.”
Out of the nine games in the first set, the two players broke each other’s serve seven times. The win completed a sweep for Wolbach over Mihailicenco. The adversaries split two matches last season.
“I feel like I have gotten the hang of her game,” Wolbach said. “I can read her easier now. “
Wolbach made some changes to her serve and it’s still a work in progress.
“I’ve changed it in the last year,” Wolbach said. “I started getting my feet together. Changing how I position my body. I am still trying to get the hang of that. The wind threw me off in the first set. I just had to get up more on the ball and that seemed to work.”
The sophomore plans to compete in the Western Mass. Individual Tournament starting on Friday.
“I am only a sophomore so I am hoping I can learn as much as I can,” Wolbach said. “I don’t expect to get super far but it would be great. I think just pushing myself and trying as hard as I can and learning as much as I can is what I care about.”
At No 1 doubles, Destiny Rodriguez and Makayla Craig of Turners Falls got the better of Greenfield’s Adelle Bross and Veralin Jackson 6-0, 6-3. Lizzy Derivolkova of Greenfield got the win at No. 3 singles over Jesi Berry of Turners Falls 6-0, 6-1.
