Greenfield, MA – Gary Albert Brown age 71 of Greenfield, MA passed away on April 5th, 2026. Gary was born in Greenfield, MA on September 6, 1954, son of Albert P. Brown and Jane (Schrang) Brown. Both parents have passed. Also, twin sons: Sean Albert and Ethan Gary passed in 1998.
Gary graduated and attended; The Roberts School in Shelburne, MA, Bement School in Deerfield, MA, Greenfield High School and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan and directing school in Los Angeles, CA.
Gary managed the Garden Theatre and Showplace Theater in Greenfield, as well as serving as a regional manager for a number of theaters from Springfield to Pittsfield to Brattleboro, VT. He was a long-time employee of Lunt Silversmiths and, more recently, Mayhew Steel in Turners Falls.
Gary was a talented amateur screenwriter, having submitted a number of screenplays which were well received. He was a movie historian, a lover of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. He was a track star and amateur film maker in high school and a part-time comedian to anyone who would listen. He loved “The Sox” particularly Carl “Yaz” Yastrzemski; he enjoyed the ocean and, as a kid, beginning in 1961, he would spend summers in Truro on Cape Cod with his family. He loved popcorn and Dr. Pepper and chocolate covered cherries (but not together)-and cats. In his earlier years, he was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew.
Gary leaves his son, Ian Francis Brown of Amherst, who he was unendingly proud of; his friend and beloved brother, Robert “Bob” Bobby” “Tito” Brown of Greenfield; his cousins, Suzanne and Mitch Hammer and their family; Linda Zamenski and her family; Kendra Bergeron and her family and many friends that he’s known and cherished for years.
Gary will be remembered for his humor, his good looks, his talent for writing and drawing and his wealth of knowledge about all things cinema. He loved his family and his friends. We will all miss him.
A Service will be held at The Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew, 8 Church Street, Greenfield, MA with the Rev. Heather Blais officiating on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 1:00 PM. A reception will follow the service.
Burial will be at Green River Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
