GREENFIELD — Montague City Road will be closed from Monday, April 13, through Wednesday, April 15, to allow the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to install drainage along the road as part of a broader, $3.53 million resurfacing project.

The roughly 1-mile stretch of road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A map of the work zone released by the city of Greenfield shows the length of Montague City Road closed from where it meets Mountain Road and the General Pierce Bridge into Montague. Where Montague City Road turns into Cheapside Street is also part of the work zone, according to the map, with the work area ending where the road reaches Routes 5 and 10.
MassDOT spokesperson John Goggin said that traffic will be detoured during construction, but access to properties on the road will be maintained. Drivers coming over the General Pierce Bridge into Greenfield will need to turn right at Mountain Road.
The entirety of MassDOT’s work as part of the $3.53 million project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027, with the goal of improving pedestrian access.
“This project seeks to resurface and provide pedestrian accommodations on Montague City Road in Greenfield,” a project description on the MassDOT website explains. “In addition to resurfacing, the project will replace the existing sidewalks on the south/east side of Montague [City] Road, and construct new pedestrian facilities where [they are] non-existent. ADA-compliant ramps and crossings will also be installed.”
