Greenfield’s Jack Laurie was the recipient of an Amo Bessone High School Hockey Award, announced by the Amo Bessone Awards Committee on Thursday.
Laurie got the Eddie Shore Award for outstanding defensive play. Award winners receive a $500 scholarship. The presentation of the award occurs on April 9 at the Dante Club in West Springfield. While Laurie’s defensive prowess is well established, he broke out on offense in his senior season with 28 goals.
Senior forwards Matthew Regan of Pope Francis and Joseph Maffia of Westfield received the Amo Bessone Award, presented to this season’s overall most valuable players.
The Bessone Awards are the legacy of Amo “Betts” Bessone, who grew up in West Springfield and gained national recognition as NCAA Division I Coach of the Year when his Michigan State hockey team won the national championship in 1966.
