I’ve been a passionate defender of the library since moving here 20 years ago. I support Roxann Wedegartner for mayor because I support the library.

Ten years ago, I was on the street (twice) with a bullhorn, trying to protect the library’s budgets and staff from a hostile administration. Wedegartner, in contrast, has been strongly supportive of our library, new and old. She respects our library’s leadership, staff, and patrons. She believes libraries are fundamental to democracy and economic prosperity, as do I.

My family supported Ginny DeSorgher for City Council, and I appreciate her public service. I’m extremely disturbed to see among her supporters, whom she has marched with, those who tried to sink the new library project, over and over again.

I’m also baffled by DeSorgher’s campaign promises. They don’t add up. They seem to give everything to everyone. When you are a candidate, you can promise anything you want, and deflect as many questions as you can. Governance is having to make it all add up.

Wedegartner also gets things done. She operates as a professional and understands that city government is filled with detail and nuance. She does the hard work, and makes tough decisions. Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about our Police Department. I care about safety, and I care about human rights. I see Wedegartner taking a considered, careful approach to making lasting change in the city’s police force. It is slower than I want. But I don’t hear realistic alternatives from Wedegartner’s critics.

I’m voting for Wedegartner to continue her professional administration of the city I love.
